i-deck 100 Review by What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision

"One unique feature is the i-deck’s Automatic Position Correction (APC). When you power up the system for the first time it emits three different test tones. An internal mic measures these and either leaves the sound alone, or tunes it for being positioned close to a wall or in the corner of a room. We found the i-deck sounded best close to a wall up to around 30cm away. Taking the digital stream from your iPod or iPhone, the i-deck produces an open, spacious sound."

"Detail levels are excellent across the frequency range. Spin Maps by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the lead guitar sparkles, while the solitary vocal sounds expressive. Drums hit with precision and a sense of dynamism that some rivals find tough to match. The Prodigy’s No Good (Start The Dance) is a potent mix of rhythms and basslines, yet the i-deck laps them up, producing a splendidly attacking, rhythm-driven rendition of this club classic. Even at low volume levels, the i-deck’s dynamic capabilities shine through."

i-deck 100 Review featured on T3.com

"Designed with high-end style to accompany premium substance the i-deck 100 is an all-round aesthetically pleasing piece of kit, capable of acting as a shelving unit’s focal point rather than simply another slab of lifeless black plastic"

"In terms of audio quality it is hard to fault the i-deck.  Whilst sounds are detailed and diverse at standard and lower volume settings, pushed to the higher end of the volume spectrum the Monitor Audio dock comes into its own with deep, rich, audio unaffected by the distortion and warping found in so many of its competitors."

Trusted Reviews i-deck 200 review

"Further adding to the Monitor Audio i-deck 200's prowess is the inclusion of an in-built DAC (digital to analogue converter), something that only the upper echelons of the iPod dock competition include. This bypasses the circuitry of the iPhone/iPod/iPad (deemed substandard for audiophiles) and takes the digital signal directly, using its own 28/56 bit dual precision processing to do the heavy lifting.

Also, an innovative Automatic Position Correction (APC) system configures the output of the i-deck 200 depending on where it is positioned. In the rear of the i-deck 200 is a mic which produces three frequencies pulses (70, 85 and 100 hertz) and their reverberations help the dock determine if it is near a wall or corner. If the power button flashes once no correction is added, twice shows it is compensating for being placed near a wall and three times if placed near a corner. APC only kicks in if the i-deck 200 has been disconnected from the mains as this leads it to assume it has been moved.

All of which suggests Monitor Audio should have created a superb sounding premium dock, and thankfully it has."

"Never has a dock been better value for money."

MSN's Most Desirable Music Gadgets

MSN Tech & Gadgets have featured the i-deck 200 in their collection of "Most desirable music gadgets", here is what they had to say:

"Monitor Audio is one of those well-established British hi-fi firms with a serious pedigree in designing and manufacturing quality speakers. As such, its i-deck 200 has quickly become popular amongst the discerning audiophile crowd.

As well as looking cool, the i-deck 200 genuinely does sound fantastic. Dual 100mm C-CAM bass drivers individually powered by custom-configured 50W amplifiers and 25mm gold dome tweeters, all driven by precision-tailored 20W power amps is why. But you don't really need to remember all of that! You just need to listen to it."

i-deck 200 Review by HiFi choice magazine

"We reckon the APC feature is a bit of a winner, as this unit certainly has some of the best bass we've heard from a table-top unit. It's not just extended, but also unusually well controlled and detailed, and it quite literally underpins a very assured performance."

i-deck 200 Review by What Hi-Fi?

"Sonically, it's always been strong; at almost half the price, and among new peers, it's only more impressive. Listening to Lana Del Rey's Off To The Races, there's solid bass and a good sense of dynamics helping the track sound punchy and fast. Treble notes are exciting without sounding bright and Del Rey's languid vocals sound natural.

The i-deck was unlucky not to win five stars at the old price. If audio performance is your key concern, at this price it's hard to argue with what's on offer here."

Rating 5/5

Verdict: "Low on frills but high on quality; at this price it's a sonic star"

i-deck 200 - The Sunday Times' ingear Best Buy

"Monitor Audio's speaker dock for the iPhone and iPod Touch is a typical British hi-fi design: devoid of frills, quirky to look at and with an emphasis on sound quality. The one novel piece of technology it employs is an automatic tuning system that uses a built-in microphone to monitor the acoustics of the room and calibrate the sound balance accordingly. This feature works well - but it's the pair of excellent speakers and punchy amplification that are the stars of the show, producing a powerful, expansive sound that can handle quieter pieces of music with delicacy but has a mightily loud bark when needed.

The system is a good match for larger rooms or even occaissional garden use (although there are no wireless or battery options). Although iPads will sit on the i-deck's digital 30-pin connector, the maker does not recommend it. There is a 3.5mm input for a tablet or other audio sources. The device's build quality is excellent."

Rating 5/5

Verdict: "Superb sonics, solid build - a great buy."

I bought the i-deck 100 from Richer Sounds in Brighton and consider it the deal of the century. Great build quality and the sound is great too.

Received my i-deck 200 yesterday and I am very very pleased with it the build and sound quality is second to none. I already own a BX5 surround set up and I know the quality of monitor audio products, this delivers a 5 star sound and build how anyone can say that this is not a quality product does not know what they are talking about. If I could rate the i-deck 10 out of 10 I would especially at the reduced price. Thank you Monitor Audio for yet another hi fi kit anyone looking for an iPod dock in the sud £400 range look no further than the i-deck 200. Whatever type of music you throw at it the i-deck handles it with aplomb. You can buy with confidence from an acclaimed British hi fi manufacturer.

Amazing bit of kit but unfortunately for anyone thinking of buying one from richer sounds I picked the last one up from there entire stock ex display model and I only paid 100 pound can't believe my luck...but my advice if your looking to unleash your iPod or iPhones full potential then you need to find and purchase a I-deck 200 rich in sound and looks!

I bought one of these from Richer Sounds in November 2012 - at an incredibly good price of £130 - it sounds great from my iPod (or my iPad 3) and even my iPhone 5 with 30 pin adapter - to get the best out of it you need to have your tunes encoded Apple Lossless (MP3 or AAC are noticeably duller sounding - I guess the DAC is doing its job).

Just bought this for my daughter for Christmas to accompany her new iPod. Spent a couple of weeks on the net investigating the best buy under £100, came across the 'usual iPod docking station suspects'. I must admit that i had not heard of 'Monitor Audio' and thought it sounded too specialist to afford. Thank you internet, 'What Hi-Fi' and 'Richer Sounds' for an amazing deal, sub £100. Unboxes it to test and see what all the fuss was about, 'I am mind blown by the sound and build quality of this system'. Point blank forget the rest. PS I never normally leave reviews.

What a great listening experience it has been. I deck 200 is very articulate with overwhelming layers of sound on offer. It will uncover every instrument in a track which will unleash sound, which individual were not aware, existed on a track. This might even tempt others to, have re-listened to their old albums collection. Oh bass!!! The bass have texture; detailing individual cords in track which will display the hard work of any talented bassist. The midrange gives an edge to the snare drums; moreover it will uplift vocals and guitar to a new dimension. I will not use the word “perfect” though because; somehow the stereo separation was not as open to match that of dedicated pair of speaker. However in its defence, I deck 200 is an iPod dock speaker, but I guarantee it will outshine some awarded mini system in the high fidelity department. Perhaps this justifies its price tag.

Just picked this up at Richer Sounds. Bargain of the year. No frills but all you have to do is listen. The clarity really does make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Listened to all the opposition up to £500 and nothing compares.

This is pure quality from the build to the sound.I listend to quite a few different docks from £100-£500 and this was head and shoulders above them all. The music sounds so clear and defined, the base pure, treble sharp and vocals clear. For the money its a no brainer.

The i-deck 200 screams quality the moment you unwrap it and it just keeps on giving when you dock an ipod or iphone. The highs are crystal, the lows are well defined and controlled and the sense of scale for an ipod dock is unimaginable! A steal at the current £250 asking price. Great item Monitor Audio! Hugely recommended!

With its superlative looks and performance the i-deck 200 is worth every penny over the already superb i-deck 100. Quality has to be paid for nevertheless the i-deck 200 is still an absolute bargain. Simple.

Just got this today noon and am blown away by the sound of this i-deck. Even straight out of the box it was superb, can't turn it off yet, oh dear have 1200 songs 320kbps on the iPhone and same on iPad, gonna be late night I think. Amazing sound from such compact unit which looks good too. My wife loves it as well, a bonus that is. Well done you guys,This is definitely the dock to beat. Have heard them all now and glad I waited for the
i-deck 100.

I would say, this has a lovely sound and has a great build quality to it too. The whole experience fills a large room, and doesn't struggle too much on treble or bass. The only real downsides I can mention is the fiddly remote control, and lack of airplay .. though the wireless adaptor is mentioned...
